Not Your Father’s (Day) PR

18 Jun

My dad always says, “When I was your age I used to walk 17 minutes to get to school with no shoes” or something about making only 25 cents an hour working some ice cream shop in the rickets of some village in the Middle East.

Well, Dad. I walk more than 17 minutes to get to work or I take a gross, dirty subway that ruin my shoes and trust, totally feels like I get paid a quarter an hour also, considering the economy sucks and entry PR girls get duped in salary until you hit it big or have a lot of experience.

It may seem in PR not much has changed in theory. You still have your creative strategies, your media, your pitches and releases, except now you have SO much MORE creative, so much MORE media and so many more releases but some PR stunts just could not have taken place in 19-something old.

If done well, publicity stunts can cause positive bizz-buzz for you and your company. And when a PR girl’s worst night mare happens and a stunt turns into a wild mess crashing 100 mph with an oncoming train, well, let’s just say there’s no such thing as bad publicity…

What girl doesn’t want a pony? – Remember this stunt when Groupon’s now-ex-CEO almost gave Mayor Bloomberg a Pony? Those are just the kind of crazy ideas that showered Groupon with success.

Corona moons the world – This past weekend, some PR genius collaborated with some astronomy dude, and created the coolest billboard in New York. The brand worked day and night to turn the moon into their lime. The event lasts a total of two nights for a couple hours, but the buzz it creates is endless!

72 Days of Marriage – I still can’t call hoax on the whole thing. Kimmy K loves that attention but the girl isn’t crazy to get married just for publicity… or is she? Which other celebrity can you name exactly how many days they were married, what went wrong, and who said what. I mean I couldn’t really even do that for any of my OWN past relationships. Side note,  she’s officially made Kanye a father which makes it all that much more relevant.

xo,

xoxo

PS – a very happy Father’s day to my old man. See you in T minus two days!

Let’s Come Together and Help OKlahoma

29 May

Being a PR girl, it’s a true sin that every time we watch TV (mindlessly) our brains can (somehow) always pick up cues to call out the product placements and the PR integration. It’s a switch, once turned on, that can never, ever, be turned off. And so last night while I was watching The Voice and Googling “how old is Danielle Bradberry?” and “how to make Adam Levine fall in love with me?” I saw, which I hate to say, was one.of.the.BEST.product.integrations I have seen yet.

Maybe it was the cause. Maybe it’s the fact that I wish I had caffeine right now because a cookie crumble mocha with soy milk sounds delic. Or maybe it’s the fact that it’s pretty bad-assery. But Starbucks hit the mark with this one, using our fave coach, Blake Shelton, and creative sbux cups to support Oklahoma relief efforts.

So if you haven’t had a chance to donate some change yet, don’t worry because this is easier than ever (and far more fun)! So, today, during your 3pm crash step in to your nearest (participating) sbux, donate as much as you can, and walk away with free coffee. In times like this, every little bit helps for someone who lost everything they worked for for over 50 years in less than 50 seconds – and I love how Starbucks is contributing! It’s not over yet so don’t forget to continue to

Pray+for+Oklahoma

The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy (and a love for mochas and an eye for PR integrations),

Memori-graphic Day

28 May

“My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” – John F. Kennedy

Memorial Day is a day of freedom…. for some that means the freedom to throw the coats into some dark corner as summer starts and for others that means to remember the Veterans who helped us achieve freedom and for those lovely PR girls (put your hands in the air like you just don’t care) it’s the freedom to create infographics also known as visual-graphic-representations-of-tons-of-hopefully-interesting-information-that-slyly-slips-in-your-client. See perfect memori-graphic day example below…

Memorial-Day-Travel-Forecast-infographic

Oh AAA, you found a way to strut yourself this Memorial Day by doing a red-white-and-blue travel forecast infographic that makes people think, “I need insurance since I’m part of the 89% of road trippers which is 31M more than last year” #PRsmarts #ISeeYaBro

Happy Memori-graphic Day,

xoxo

PRom

20 May

This past Saturday was my baby sis’ senior prom and she looked absolutely stunning in her blue dress, curls and beautiful smile that melted my heart!! We talked  for hours afterwards about how it went, who wore what and every single endearing memory that she is going to carry for years to come.

In every PR girl’s path there will be achievements and memorable events that will create a scrapbook of their own PRom moments full of deep and special meaning that is unexplainable. Something that lasts with you throughout your career. A small feeling that makes you smile on your worst days and that reminds you that this is for you even when everything is going wrong. It can be anything from successfully managing 5 am monitoring without oversleeping ever or being recognized as a media bulldog. Experiences that will last a lifetime no matter what corner you turn as some of my fave PR girls can testify…

A very special moment in my PR career happened last month. My client, who puts on large scale food and wine events every year, was featured in the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle Style Section – one full page with their recommendations on where to eat, drink, and shop in the city. After months of pitching, planning, and scheduling this placement, the timing was perfect; the newspaper was distributed across every room in three separate hotels in Pebble Beach on the last day of the event – over 900 papers!” – Beauty and the Pitch’s gorg West Coast PR Girl

The first time I got to attend fashion week for a lifestyle client. Such a memorable and magical experience I will never forget!” – The lovely NYC PR Girls who are such an inspiration to every PR girl no matter where

“I think my favorite/special/most memorable PR moment was the first time I wrote a release and then earned my first placement in the New York Times. I was new to the account and it was my first time flying solo on a PR campaign, so when one of the biggest publications in the nation took notice of our clients work that was a pretty awesome moment.” – The oh-so-sweet PR Blonde who just moved on up to NY and had coffee with me today!

I work in healthcare PR, and though it isn’t as glamorous as something like fashion PR, it is quite rewarding. One of our client’s was having an event to raise awareness on an important disease, and I got to oversee it from start to finish. Being there the day of the event and having an amazing turnout made me so thankful for a job where I can better the world.” – A darlin’ Healthcare PR Girl

My top PR moment was receiving my agency’s Leadership Award, with the founder himself present at the ceremony. He is now in his 90s, and such an inspiration. He still comes into the office every day!” – Crisis and issues PR girl

What’s your PRom moment,

xoxo

The Coffee Break: PResume Rules

8 May

Ok, so there are no rules to resumes. I’ve seen some of the best resumes, some that definitely grabbed my attention, and some that made me question the existence of all things good, like why? As college grads are job hunting to be a part of the real world, and real out here it is, there are some things every PR resume should reflect:

e6cb102dc61164a5089578d9b975f7c9

Rounding up PR Words Don’t jargon it up, but don’t be afraid to show your PR knowledge with your words. Instead of saying “Printed t-shirts for Greek Week” try saying words like “Developed campaign for Greek Week including invites and giveaway shirts.” Is it a stretch? Eh. You come to learn campaigns come in all sizes. Other PR words to sprinkle into your resume include: communicate, pitch, team, clients, announcement, target, generate, digital, and the cherry on top, secured.

Eye courtesy – I know my eyes start to see glazed doughnuts after looking at resume after resume. Make yours jump out with design elements that demonstrate your style and your creativity.

Social Media BurnOh, you provided a link to your twitter to show that you understand the value of social media…. and then everything is protected? #Burn.

Under size 9 font is too small – Stick with 11, you over-achiever that has so much to squeeze onto one page. Prioritize. Everything else that doesn’t fit, like your part time job planting trees, belongs on LinkedIn because trust, if you’re coming to the wonderful world of PR then you know that we’ve stalked “researched” you already and we like to see variations.

My name is – This seems simple enough so I refuse to elaborate. Contact info is a must.

Err to the side of caution better known as ‘write it well and write it carefully’ – Typos, grammatical errors, and poor choice of words are deal breakers. And trust me, I’ve been there. I got the worst email in college from a PR Gal in regards to fixing my ONE typo. That one frickin’ typo.

Remember, HR sees your hours of work in less than 30 seconds.

Make it count,

xoxo
