HEYYYYY, Happy Bloggy-Bday BATPers!!! I cannot believe it’s been 5 years since the first post on BATP. We have grown together literally for half a decade! That means 5 years of working girl tips and fashion finds, all of my opinions because no subject is off limits and anything and everything in between from travel tricks to politics and angry koalas not to mention all of the snarky tweets and the posts that made you laugh with me (some maybe at me) but mostly 5 years with ALL OF YOU! I would have never believed that a blog I created half-jokingly while walking home after happy hour would become the platform it has to inspire people to chase their dreams while wearing the cutest high heels imaginable…. sprained ankle and all.
As most of y’all already know, BATP started while I was a baby PR intern in New York as a way to stand out at a really big agency and the rest is history! I guess my being stubborn really helps because I refuse to quit! Basically if Coco Chanel can create the most iconic fashion brand in history when she was raised in an orphanage, switched careers after pursuing singing and entertained a jaw-dropping high profile string of lovers along the way… whose to say I can’t blog once or twice a week.
AND YOU CAN TOO! I know so many people who want to start blogs or YouTube channels but think they are late to the dot-com game. Blogs were around in 1997, I didn’t even know what it was in 2010, and created one in 2012. Technically I was late to the game myself but listen, there is no other you in this world with your voice and your mind. With that said, if you’re dedicated and up for the ride, the only person making you late to start your own brand or business is yourself.
To start you off on your journey, I decided to share some of my most valuable learned lessons over the years to hopefully save you some time and brain power as you look to start a blog in 2017:
- Start small and start cheap. Go with WordPress(.com aka the free version) because as you grow, WordPress will grow with you. Sure there are some migration things you’ll deal with down the line, and the option to customize your blog, and widgets and all the fun stuff. But for now, just start writing and sharing your story! You can expand as you get more comfortable and…on the flip side… if you decide it isn’t for you at least you saved yourself a couple bucks.
- Content is (still) king. Whether that be a long AF post or a cute tiny photo, make it engaging and the best yet. My advice: read your post at least 4 times before posting. And not for grammar necessarily but to catch yourself to see if you skim through it or get the “eh, I don’t want to read it” feeling because you better believe your readers won’t want to either.
- Meet blogger babes and go on blogging dates. The best part of blogging is the people you will meet who are as driven as you are to get their story heard. Say yes to those events that pop up on Monday evenings and over the weekend even if you don’t want to. You will find endless answers and opportunities with the blogging community!
- Don’t overthink it. From the blog topic to the images you use. Just own it (literally, like don’t steal content!) Be unique and find your voice and most of all don’t get into your head. You will write sh*t or say things your friends don’t agree with (like when I poorly rated Ender’s Game), but you have to stay true to yourself. It’s how you will become the blog people want to read or the Instagram celeb people want to stalk.
Happy writing/YouTubing/social media-ing my future blogger babes and hope to see you celebrating your 5th birthday down the line!
