Future. This ever scary, looming word. The things I want to be, to see, to do, to achieve. But how?
I got together with some of my favorite bloggers to talk about how to prepare for whatever the future holds and ultimately create a better future for yourself and it got me thinking… Ya, I’ve got nothing. One thing I’ve decided for sure is that as much as I loveee day dreaming about me five years from now – you know the hotter, more successful, rocking a short bob version of me, running a beauty tech PR firm – ya, well that’s how much I hate the five year plan and don’t even get me started on the ten year one. It’s just not me.
Sure it’s supposed to motivate you but it’s not a good tool or resource for my use because I’m so incredibly hard on myself. At the end of the 5 or 10 year mark, if I was to come short on my own plans I’d be failing myself – that seems daunting. And daunting is just not a good look on the future, bob-rocking me. Les misreble!
But I completely agree that you can’t just linger in the dark and hope everything just works it self out. After 20 some odd years, I’ve come to realize life doesn’t really work like that. No matter what.
So the best piece of advice I could dig up for anyone looking to better secure their future – whether that be in life, at work, dating the guy you’re with, or just any dreams you are looking to accomplish as an older version of yourself: voice it. Voicing your plans makes a vision that much more of a reality and something that lives and breathes outside of your own head. Knowing that your mom, your colleagues, and your friends know that you are working toward a goal, having them check in on you, support you, and being able to talk through your day to day struggles of getting where you need to be puts you on the journey. Also, don’t be too hard on yourself if plans change. Take advantage of going back to the drawing board to recreate and re-voice yourself…
