I am looking into becoming a PR major and would really like more information on what to do and any advice you would have for me. I’m already a Junior, and I would really like to finish my degree by next spring. I know I’m kind of late, but I would really love to hear about your experience, how you did it and any advice you may have.
It’s no secret what path I took – I majored in PR, internshiped my butt off (I’m talking like more than 4 unpaid full time internships) and then interned some more after graduating with a degree in hand in New York before getting where I am now. Is that the only path though? No.
It’s great that you are looking to major in PR but after a couple years in the industry, the truth is, you don’t need any experience or schooling in PR specifically to get started. I have met some of the brightest people who majored in arts or literature and are still kicking big butt in the industry. What I do think any PR Girl in the making needs is internship experience! Devote some quality time to your internship and understand that it will take some serious responsibility and dedication to get started while you’re looking to change majors or take classes. Just remember, in the end you will come out on top with a good idea of what PR is that future employers will value or possibly even get hired on full time post graduation!
As a rule of thumb, it’s good to start your first internship 1-2 years before graduation. So I don’t think you’re late at all! I had my first internship during the Spring semester of my Junior year, and continued working each semester until I graduated… Even doubling up with two internships for a while there just because I couldn’t decide which one I wanted to do more! That semester easily became my guiding light.
Hope this helps and best of luck!
