It’s PAY DAY!!!
Ok, at least for some of us, in T minus 24 hours or so, and our bro-bama has money on his mind for us PR Girls. While the White House works at making sure ladies are paid equally to their male counterparts, it’s still really really important to know your marketplace value at all times. You know you can’t leave it up to the government.
Especially when you are interviewing. That’s actually the scariest time as you walk the “What If I Undervalue Myself” and the “What If I Ask For Too Much And They’re Like Peace” balance beam. But it doesn’t have to be such a tricky act…
Let’s start by taking an oath to cut the BS. Yes, the salary is a part of the package deal with the great benefits the company offers but does that really matter more? First step, look at your financials and determine for yourself the bare minimum you need to make to be able to function financially. That’s a fair number to start with and advice I wish I knew before I signed up for interning in NYC at $10/hour. Girl make do but girl also make stupid.
Use tools to help determine what your salary is and what people in the field generally make like Glass Door or PRSA. This is a great place to start but keep in mind that it’s different for every single person. Your experience and education matter but also where you live because the cost of living changes things up from city to city. Having research to back up any number you have in mind is simply smart.
But more than anything, be able to communicate your ask and sell yourself. For some reason, guys are able to communicate a lot better when it comes to making money (thats all I ever will give credit to men for, lets be honest) and when it comes down to it, us girls need to ask, need to get over our fears of what people will think of us, because at the end of the day, mama’s gotta eat. (Yes, I started talking like this and now I can’t stop).
Get that cheddar,
