My love for talking (about PR and just everything) all day long mixed with some southern hospitality of helping a friend in need brings my new fave column, Dear BATP. Nothing makes me happier than getting emails from y’all! Have questions, comments, concerns, about being a PR girl, send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org because I may not share my shoes or chocolate, but I’ll always share my thoughts! xox BATP
I have a question for you. What advice would you give someone who didn’t major in PR but wants to enter that field? I studied International Relations and I was going to go to law school but I no longer want to do that and now I am not sure how to get my foot in the door in the communications world. Any advice is appreciated.
Hope all is well.
Some of the smartest, most creative, and truly awe-inspiring people I have met in PR did not major in it but something that they were interested in – literature, history, fine arts, public health – and they’ve made it. Any major having to do with communicating with people, writing and reading can help you. Journalism is also ideal if your college doesn’t offer a PR major. However, it’s not the end of the road!
PR, simply put, is experience based. Interning is the one sure way to get your foot in the door and make finding a job after college simpler but more than that you have to be open to learn. Start a blog, join your PRSSA chapter, stay up to date with news and trends, go to networking events and ask local agencies for an informational interviews. These are all little ways that will make you reach your big dreams.
Wishing you the best of luck,
