Fifty Shades of PR

24 Jul

Everyone is talking about the 21st century fairy tale, Fifty Shades of Grey, hitting #1 on the Amazon ebook bestseller list (Not surprisingly so. If anyone sees someone reading a print version, that’s just fifty shades of embarrassing.) Fifty Shades has became a lifestyle with a few simple messages, behind all the kinky f***kery, that even PR Girls can take into the work place

1. Find a client that arouses your passions. PR can go into so many different arenas, whether that be fashion, entertainment, sports, lifestyle, consumer or corporate, government, financial, technology and on and on and on. Sometimes its a merge of more than one and finding the best client for you can take some trail and error. The best way to really figure out what you like and what your “hard limits” are comes easily with internships – the perfect three month trial period.

2. Take chances and alter the definition of acceptable. Fifty Shades comes with a headache of controversy but taking a risk to get earned publicity is one of the many tight ropes PR professionals walk on and Grey nails it (HAH no pun attended). You have to have a point of view and the confidence to express it… even if at times it seems a 3rd grader just learned how to copy and paste.

3. Word of mouth has power to drive awareness as girlfriends told their friends about the books, and their friends told their friends. Clients are always looking for more people to know about their IT product and a learned lesson for all – Just dive into the conversation and go with the flow. Good or Bad. It’s out there.

4. There’s always room for negotiation. Enough said – with clients or with co-workers, don’t be afraid to draft what you need and want. Oh and be careful because your email conversations are most likely 100% monitored.

Laters Baby!
