Whenever somebody USED to ask, “Oh what do you do?” I used to say, “Oh, I’m an Assistant Account Executive.” They generally say ok and act like they understand, only for me to later realize they think I am an office assistant to the executive, like a secretary.
Well… Sort of. But then again, sort of not.
PR agencies have their own ladder, similar to that of the corporate ladder. You can’t possibly become a senior anything after only a few short months interning or stepping into the communications world. It takes time, approximately a year or so, to get a promotion in PR. So you start at the bottom and then you go up. Sounds pretty standard there…
So, yes I am an assistant where I help the senior level folks but its also in terms of junior-level PR professional. But no, I’m not a secretary type assistant and do not sort through snail mail or pick up anyone’s dry cleaning or walk dogs… It’s not a job, it’s a career. So now whenever anybody asks what I do, I’m going to smile and say, “I’m a PR professional” and leave it at that…
I like that. PR Professional. Congrats girl!
