One of the hardest things about being an intern is that your future is pretty much a big blurry haze. Can you go on vacation with friends next month? Will you still be interning next month? How much will you be making? Will you still be at the same company? It’s difficult. And after speaking with a couple senior level folks, the advice was consistent – fend for yourself and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
That translated means: go interview at other places in case nothing here can be worked out.
So you do it. AND everyone knows you’re doing it. And what gives it away… the suit and the long lunch. Its difficult going out to other firms when you are so content where you are. But through this process I have learned that transparency is key. No, I’m not going to the doctor – I am stepping out of the office in hopes that I can secure my future and start my career. It may be awkward, but at the end of the day everyone understands you can’t be an intern forever…
So dress the part and dress nice and go on all the interviews. If all else, the more interviews the more opportunities to see work environments at other firms and maybe after that you realize where you truly belong
