Last week I read an article titled How to date a PR professional so decided to make my own rendition – how to date a pr intern. Being an intern, I feel like I’m a pretty credible source on this topic but do realize that these are only my opinions…
Here are four things about dating a PR intern:
We’re highly motivated.
Our careers are just beginning – we need to stay upbeat. Let us be optimistic about everything, I mean literally everything – because it carries over to the workplace. And the more motivated we are to succeed the more likely we are to – right? Yes. Let me think it.
Blasting a pitch to 45 people is scary – one error and it goes to 45 people with no control to stop it. When your boss calls you into their office, its scary – it can be anything and sometimes absolutely nothing. We try really hard to avoid mistakes, but it stills happens. Thankfully, being an intern everyone realizes there is a learning curve. However, when we beat ourselves up just be supportive and listen – we just have to get it off our chest.
Maybe slightly exaggerated but we are limited on how much we can spend and little things add up. No, I don’t care to grab dinner or coffee or go watch a movie – maybe once a week, maybe on the weekends but not on the daily. So, suggest something that a person on a budget can afford. In New York it may seem impossible to do affordable activities but then again its New York – walk around time square or central park or go on a celebrity hunt and that should be a good (and slightly creepy) date.
Also, we are going to want the coolest and hottest gadgets. Like an iPad. Just keep reminding us the benefits to wait till the new one comes out – and hopefully by then we are hired full time and can afford such luxuries. Without saying, “You can’t get that now,” be slyly supportive!
We are constantly wanting to do more.
At work that is… we want every task and every challenge and we want to conquer it. This makes us tired, not to mention this is some of our first time ever working the 40 hour work week so its quite the change for us. So on those hard days of meeting deadlines and using our brain to the maximum, if we want to mindlessly watch Netflix – join in and watch How I Met Your Mother with us.
It’s not the easiest being an intern, but hopefully reaps great rewards at the end not only for the intern but also for the significant other who supported you through it (at least a fancier dinner!) Just look forward to the day you get the text that says, I’m finally an AAE!! I’m sure that’s going to be a whole new post…
